Great-Grandmother raises funds on a wing and a prayer

On Saturday 9th of June Isobel (The Flying Granny!) did her wing walk! To view a photograph click here.

Great-Grandmother Isobel Craigie is gearing herself up to take to the skies in a daredevil charity challenge to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.

Isobel, from Ballater in Scotland, will soar through the air in June just days after her 80th birthday when she takes part in a sponsored wing-walk.

She has worked tirelessly for many years organising numerous fund-raising activities in Ballater and is looking forward to what she describes a less stressful fundraising event.

So far Isobel has raised over £40,000 for the MS Society after her daughter Margaret was diagnosed with the disabling neurological condition in 1994.

She said: “My daughter has MS and I am just doing what I feel any parent would in a similar situation. I would love to be able to take her condition away, but I can't. So the next best thing that I can do is help to raise awareness and money on behalf on the MS Society to help them in their efforts to find a cure.”

Isobel will climb aboard one of a number of light aircraft on 9 June as part of Aberdeen’s Emmerdale Extravaganza fundraising event.

To take part, she must raise a minimum of £1,500 for local charities. Isobel hopes to raise a sky high target with the remaining amount donated to the MS Society.

Granddaughter Jane said: “She is a truly amazing woman. We are all very proud of her but will be anxious on the day I’m sure. Let's hope that people give generously so that she doesn't feel the need to go to more extreme lengths to raise money!”

MS is the result of damage to myelin – the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres of the central nervous system – which interferes with messages between the brain and the body.

More than 10,000 people have MS in Scotland, with one in 500 people affected. This is the highest rate in the world.

Isobel added: “I now know a few people who have MS and know how it can affect people in many different ways. However, I think a lot of people are still very much in the dark about what MS actually is.”
